MRS. MENA CABLE IS DEAD AT HOME

Well-Known Sandusky Woman Died Sunday - Had Been Active In Church and Civic Work

Mrs. Mena Walther Cable, widow of the late Laurence Cable, and one of Sandusky's oldest and best known residents, died Sunday afternoon at 4:05 o'clock at her home, Monroe st. and Central av. She had been confined to her bed for the past seven weeks.

Few women in Sandusky were better or more favorably known than Mrs. Cable. Born in Canton on December 21, 1843, she was a daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth Walther, and she was married to Laurence Cable on November 26, 1880.

The Cable family provided the site for the present Providence hospital building and aided financially in the establishment of the institution and also equipped the chapel in the building. Although of the Catholic faith, Mrs. Cable did not limit her activities to the church and organization of that faith, but took a leading part in civic affairs of the community and her work was diversified.

She served on the original board of directors of Good Samaritan hospital and was also active for many years in the affairs of the Humane Society. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's church.

Mrs. Cable is survived by one son, the Rev. Father Herman Cable of San Diego, Cal.; one daughter, Mrs. Caroline Wagner of San Jose, Cal.; six grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Louis Breitenstein of Canton, and one brother, John Walther of Cleveland.

The funeral will be held from the residence Wednesday morning at 8:30 o'clock with services at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock, the Rev. W.C. Zierolf being celebrant of the solemn requiem high mass. Internment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery. It has been requested that flowers be omitted.

Mr. Walter voluntarily appeared before the probate judge and affidavits bearing upon his insanity are sworn to by two physicians. Application has been made for his acceptance at the Toledo hospital for the insane. Mr Walter was formerly engaged in the furniture installment business at the corner of Market and Second streets."

Notes:

The 1899 "Canton Official City Directory" lists him as a resident with Catherine A (Numan) at 720 Marion St, though she is listed separately as his widow and he is said to have died at the Massillon State Hospital in November of 1898. It is likely that he died as the information to compile the 1899 directory was being gathered, leading to the confusing listings.

He has been employed at Murray's foundy as a machinist since Tuesday last, and last night exhibited symptoms of insanity. He comes from Canton, O. A few nights ago Mrs. Drissel's house on East Third street, was also visited and a quantity of articles stolen. Both cases were given to MArshal Schlegel to work on, and he succeeded so well in tracing the burglars and hunting them down, that at five o'clock this morning, armed with a search warrant, and accompanied by Officers Sell and Louzenheiser, he proceeded to the dwelling of Frank Walters, corner of East Second and Slusser streets, and there found Walters and his stepson, Frank Newman, both of whom were arrested. A search was made of the house, which brought to light a lot of canned fruit and baskets, stolen from Mel Cox's residence, and some baskets, a pitcher and other articles, identified as being part of the property taken from Mrs. Drissel's residence. Walters and Newman were takend to the city prison and locked up to await a hearing before the Mayor."
