    "Hugh White McCaleb (McKillip) married Elizabeth Holbrook on August 13, 1803 in Stokes Co., North Carolina. Hugh was the son of Andrew McKillip and Elizabeth Lowery and Elizabeth was the oldest daughter of James Holbrook and Barbara Fair. He was named in the will of his grandmother, Isobel Lowery, dated 11 Dec 1809, probated in 1812, and that of his father Andrew Mckillip in June 1810. He signed a power of attorney in Logan Co., Ky. in 1818, when he sold land that he had inherited from his father to his brother-in-law, Michael Fair. From there, he moved by way of Lauderdale Co., Tn. and Morgan Co., Alabama, to Fayette Co., Alabama. The family lived for several years in Morgan Co., near the city of Falkville. Three of the children were married there. The move to Fayette County probably occurred in the mid 1830's."

    Alexander Logan was born February, 1825 in Fayette County, Alabama to Robert "Bob" Logan and Virginia Jane "Jennie" McCaleb. The Logans were staunch Republicans and Church of Christ believers. Robert had been raised as a Presbyterian but was supposedly converted by Andrew Campbell.

    The eight brothers, born between 1823 and 1847 all supported the Union cause although the oldest, Daniel Lapsley "Lap" Logan could not enlist for medical reasons. Because of a hernia, he was unable to serve in the Union Army with his brothers but he helped build bridges for the Union forces. It is possible Lap died from tuberculosis although it is rumored he was murdered and his body tied on the back of horse, taken home, and thrown into the yard.

    Alex married Nancy Beasley on February 5, 1854 in Marion County, Alabama by John McCaleb, minister.

    The muster rolls of Company B, 1st Regiment, Alabama Calvary contain the following evidence of Alexander's service:

    Alexander B. Logan voluntarily enlisted in the Union Army, Alabama Calvary, January 16, 1863 at Glendale, Mississippi by P. A. Sternburg, in Company A, 81st Ohio Infantry and mustered in January 22, 1863 in Corinth, Mississippi to serve one . Pvt. Alexander Logan, incurred measles while in the line of duty with Company B, 1st Regiment, and died in the 81st Ohio Regiment Hospital. His brother, Hugh White (Logan), was with him at the time of his death. March 24, 1863, John Calvin Logan, also a brother, received at Glendale, MS, of Captain Henry T. Summer, Commander of Company B, AL Calvary, the following, being the affects of Alexander Logan, late of said company, deceased, one Calvary jacket, one pair shoes, one blanket, and sixty dollars in specie (hard money).

    Alex died February 11, 1863 and was buried at Soldiers Cemetery, Corinth, Mississippi. After his death his widow, Nancy, would often hang his clothes outside to air. Every time she put his uniform out, their dog would start howling and continue as long as the uniform was outside. Robert Henry, his brother was appointed guardian of Alex's four minor children until November 13, 1869 when he resigned and returned guardianship to Nancy.

    John voluntarily enlisted in the Union Army, January 16, 1863 for one year at Glendale, Mississippi. He was mustered in on January 22, 1863 at Corinth, MS as a private in Captain David B. Waldeman's Company B, 1st Regiment of Alabama Calvary. He was honorably discharged in Memphis, Tennessee, January 22, 1864. John married Margaret Catherine Pate on March 26, 1869. Margaret had been born March 20, 1842 in Marion County, Alabama. John and Margaret's birth dates used here are from the 1880 census records and from John's service records. They do not match their grave markers. Their farming homestead was near Guin in Marion County, Alabama. They were the parents of ten children. John died January 26, 1898 and is buried with his wife in the Logan Family Cemetery located on their homestead.

    Andrew voluntarily enlisted with the Union Army, July 24, 1862, at Huntsville, AL, as a private, by Captain Bankhead for three years, with Company K, 1st Regiment of Alabama volunteers. He was sick with typhoid fever and in Number 13 hospital, Nashville, Tennessee, from November 1, 1862 until January, 1863. After he was discharged from the hospital, he was assigned February 1, 1863 to Company E, 1st Regiment of Middle Tennessee Calvary. He was captured at Rome, Georgia, on May 3, 1863 and confined at Richmond, Virginia on May 9, 1863. He was paroled at City Point, Virginia on May 15, 1863 and reported to Camp Parole, Massachusetts on May 18, 1863. Andy was sent to C.C.O. on May 19, 1863 and then reassigned to Company K, 1st Regiment, Alabama Calvary on June 9, 1863, which was commanded by Col. George E. Spencer. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 1, 1963 by order of Col. Spencer and was on daily duty as commanding sergeant of Company K, 1st Regiment, Alabama Calvary until June of 1865. On June 15, 1865, Andrew entered Number 4 hospital, Nashville, Tennessee with symptoms of malaria fever and mumps that he had contracted at Huntsville, Alabama. After being in the hospital 20 days, he was released upon request and since he was not fit for service, he desired to be mustered out with the Regiment in order to be assisted home by his comrades. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant on July 19, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee by reason of termination of the war. He was an Alabama Torie after the war.

    Andrew had been a farmer before the war and had received a land grant for a farm in Fayette County, Alabama in 1857. In 1868, he purchased a farm near Yampertown and the Luxapallila Creek in Guin, Marion County, Alabama near his parents. He also moved his widowed sister, Betty Elizabeth Logan Hunt and her four children there to live with him.

    He married Catherine Elizabeth "Cathern" Cothern on March 12, 1876 in Gold Mine, Marion County, Alabama. Cathern was the daughter of Gabrial Cothern and Mary Jane Clement, born June 27, 1847 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

    In the fall of 1881 Andy moved his family, Cathern's mother and her grandson Ben to another farm near the Buttahatchee River. It was located east of where the Old Haley Post Office stood years ago on what was then called the Tuscaloosa-Russellville Road in Marion County, Alabama. They stayed there and worked the land for about ten years.

    Andy then purchased another farm in the New River area, still in Marion County and moved his family there in 1891. By then he and Cathern had seven children of his own along with several family members living with them. He donated land from this farm to build the Gold Mine Church of Christ building, the cemetery and the school building that once stood at a corner of the cemetery.

    As a result of exposure and illness during the war, Andy became disabled in his later years. He walked with a limp and had to use a cane. His last home was only a quarter of a mile from Gold Mine, where he would walk to pick up his mail. He would walk to the road and sit down in the shade, waiting until someone came along to give him a wagon ride to town. A few days before he died, he realized his time was short and told Cathern to stay where they were living and not move from place to place. On the day he died, he called her to him and asked her to "stay close by me today" shortly before he passed on. Andy and Cathern were buried in the family plot of the Gold Mine Church of Christ Cemetery, Marion County, Alabama.

    James enlisted as a private in the Union Army in Limestone County, Alabama. He was signed in by Captain Canfield, for three years with Company K, 1st Regiment, Alabama Calvary at Huntsville, Alabama on July 1, 1862. He was transferred to Captain Smith's Company, 1st Regiment, Alabama Calvary, at Huntsville, Alabama on August 12, 1862. His service records show that he was with Company E, 1st Regiment, Middle Tennessee Calvary, by October 31, 1862. In November, he entered Number 4 Army Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee, when he died December 24, 1862 from pneumonia. He was buried in Nashville City Cemetery, Davidson County, Tennessee, grave marker number 2059.

    James received a land grant in 1856 and had been a farmer in Fayette County, Alabama prior to his enlistment. He never married.

    Robert Logan was born June 22, 1840, Fayette County, Alabama to Robert "Bob" Logan and Virginia Jane "Jennie" McCaleb. The Logans were staunch Republicans and Church of Christ believers. Robert had been raised as a Presbyterian but was supposedly converted by Andrew Campbell.

    The eight brothers, born between 1823 and 1847 all supported the Union cause although the oldest, Daniel Lapsley "Lap" Logan could not enlist for medical reasons. Because of a hernia, he was unable to serve in the Union Army with his brothers but he helped build bridges for the Union forces. It is possible Lap died from tuberculosis although it is rumored he was murdered and his body tied on the back of horse, taken home, and thrown into the yard.

    Robert voluntarily enlisted in the Union Army, January 16, 1863, with Company B, 1st Regiment, Alabama Calvary at Glendale, Mississippi and was signed in by P. A. Sternburg. He was mustered in January 22, 1863 at Corinth, Mississippi as a private. Robert was captured by the enemy while in battle at Vinsons (same as Vincent's on 10/26/1863?) Cross Roads and held prisoner for days. Service records from Washington D.C. do not provide the exact number of days. He was honorably discharged in Memphis, Tennessee on February 6, 1864. Robert was also an Alabama Torie.

    On October 10, 1867, Robert married Mary Elizabeth Matthews, born June 11, 1848, at the bride's home in Lamar County, Alabama by Justice of the Peace, John G. Holloway. Mary was the daughter of Henry Walter Matthews and Roxanna Maddox. Robert and Mary had nine children, the last one born seven months after Robert was killed June 21, 1884 while operating a threshing machine when his clothing caught in one of the belts and pulled him into the machine. The machine was owned by Mr. Whitehead and located on Hobson Creek near the Whitehouse Church of Christ. Robert was buried, along with his wife, in the Whitehouse Church of Christ Cemetery, Marion County, Alabama.

Haldoman, until his honorable discharge at Memphis, Tennessee on February 6, 1864. White re-enlisted March 13, 1865 as a private in Company E, 6th Regiment, Illinois Calvary for another year and was signed in by Captain Isaac H. Phillips as witnessed by W. E. Spaulding. He was mustered in at Camp Butler, Illinois on March 25, 1865 and served until he was honorably discharged at Selma, Alabama on November 5, 1865. According to records, White was a Fayette County, Alabama Torie.

    Hugh married Narcissa Cora Morris on September 23, 1874 at Falkville, Morgan County, Alabama. Narcissa was born October 25, 1851 in Glen Allen, Alabama. She was the daughter of Anderson Morris and Sarah Ann "Sally" Hackworth. Hugh Died May 23, 1916. Hugh and Narcissa had five children and they were buried at Aldridge Grove Church of Christ Cemetery, Lawrence County, Alabama.

He deserted (no additional information available) and since he had served less than 90 days, he was denied a military pension. He married Betty Elizabeth "Bessie" Pratt, daughter of Abijiah K. Pratt and S. E. Hardin. Bessie was born June 24, 1852 and died of appendicitis on June 18, 1917. They had six children and were considered to be prosperous farmers in Marion County, Alabama. He died of old age and heart failure on April 25, 1921 and is buried with his wife at Guin City Cemetery, Marion County, Alabama.

    Several sources conflict on the year of her birth.
