John Danielson served in the American Revolution as did six of his sons and his two brothers. He also served in the earlier French and Indian War, and participated in the important Crown Point expedition in 1755. John was the son of John Danielson and Margaret Mighill (Maghell). Danielson enlisted 12 May 1775 as a private, Capt. Amos Walbridge's company in Brimfield, Col David Brewer's 9th Regt. He served in the battles of Bunker Hill, Long Island and Trenton. He crossed the Delaware with the troops on 25 Dec 1776. For a time he was a member of the bodyguards to General Washington. John Danielson and his wife moved from Brimfield, MA, to Butternuts, Otsego Co, NY, in 1796. After his death nearly all of his children and grandchildren changed the family surname from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson' by common consent, believing, according to oral family history, that 'Donaldson' was the original family name back in 1600's Scotland. During the past century some researchers have speculated that John Danielson of Brimfield was the grandson of wealthy James Danielson of Killingly, CT, but that is disproven by James' 1728 will, which shows only two sons, Samuel and James, Jr. Much of the best research on the Donaldson/Danielson family was done from 1925-1965 by Harriet H. Donaldson Wilkinson.

Notes:

Nathaniel Danielson was the son of John Danielson and Margaret Mighill, and the husband of (1) Mary Morgan and (2) Rose Morgan. He served as a Major in Col. David Brewer's MA Regiment during the American Revolution. In 1777 Nathaniel was tried in the Hampshire Co (MA) Court for the murder of Jabez Nichols AKA Jabez Smith. The resolution of the case is not known. Nathaniel later owned a hotel and at age 79 he was murdered while trying to remove an unruly customer.

Nathaniel's male line died out with the early death of his only grandson Eli. Nathaniel's nephews and cousins in the 1830's changed the family name from "Danielson" to "Donaldson," believing that "Donaldson" was the original family surname back in 1600's Scotland.

Some researchers have speculated that Nathaniel was the grandson of wealthy James Danielson of Killingly, CT. However, this is disproved by James' 1728 will, which shows only two sons, Samuel and James, Jr.

Timothy Danielson was the son of John Danielson and Margaret Mighill, and the husband of (1) Beulah Winchester and (2) Elizabeth Sykes. He graduated with a theology degree from Yale College in 1756, but chose not to become a minister. He first became a teacher, then a trader, and finally an officer in the army.

When the American Revolution began he immediately joined and was rapidly promoted, reaching the rank of Brigadier General during the war. General Horatio Gates commended him for his energy in recruiting soldiers and forwarding supplies to the army during the war. He was a member of the first and second Provisional Congress, serving as chairman of the military committee.

After the war he was a senior major general of the MA state militia. Although not a lawyer he was also appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Hampshire County, MA. Upon his death he left an estate worth 1,658 pounds, including a library of forty volumes.

According to oral family history, Gen. Danielson had a "Herculean frame, combined with Herculean strength."

Timothy's male line died out with the early death of his two sons. His nephews and cousins changed the family surname from "Danielson" to "Donaldson," believing that "Donaldson" was the original family surname back in 1600's Scotland.

Luther Danielson was the son of John Danielson and Ruth Blodgett, and the husband of Katy Rich. Along with his father and five brothers he served in the American Revolution. Luther fought at the important Battle of Saratoga. In 1787 Luther was an army lieutenant who fought against the rebels in Shay's Rebellion.
Luther was still living in Brimfield, Hampshire Co, MA, in 1800. Sometime before 1813 he moved his family to Ohio. First they lived in Athens County and then by 1820 they were living in Sutton, Meigs County, Ohio.

In the early 1830's Luther's brothers and cousins all legally changed the family surname from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson,' believing 'Donaldson' to be the original family name back in 1600's Scotland. Luther, who was nearly eighty by this time and living in Ohio, was almost the only hold-out who retained the old 'Danielson' name.

Altamont Donaldson, Sr., was the son of John Danielson and Ruth Blodgett, and the husband of Anna W. Richards. Along with his father and five brothers he served in the American Revolution. He was a private in Capt. John Carpenter's Company of Springfield, Massachusetts Line, and fought at Saratoga. In 1810 Altamont was living in Otsego Co, NY. In 1820 and 1830, according to the U.S. Census he was in Virgil, Cortland Co, NY. In 1840 he lived in Oakland Co, Michigan. In the 1830's Altamont, along with nearly all of his brothers, nephews and cousins, changed the family surname, by common consent, from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson,' believing 'Donaldson' to be the original family name back in 1600's Scotland.

Altamont's grave was marked by the Genesee Chapter of the D. A. R. of Flint, MI, in June, 1915. In 1971 his stone was found fallen and broken and considerable effort was made to create a new and beautiful memorial!

After the war Lothario was a physician, and practiced in Medfield, Norfolk, MA. He later lived in New York State and then Michigan. In the 1830's Lothario, along with most of his brothers and cousins, changed the family surname from 'Danielson' to 'Donaldson,' believing it to be the original family name back in 1600's Scotland.

Notes:

Nathaniel Donaldson was the son of John Danielson and Ruth Blodgett, and the husband of 1) Candace Sykes, and 2) Keziah Rockwell Platt, widow of Peter Platt. Nathaniel legally changed his name from 'Danielson' 'to 'Donaldson' as did his surviving children, and most of his nephews and cousins, believing that 'Donaldson' was the original family name back in 1600's Scotland. In the 1850 Census he is listed as 'Nathaniel Donaldson.' He is also listed by that name in the authoritative 'History of Otsego County, New York,' 1878.
