Many researchers give his parents as John H and Dorcus (McKinley) Logan of Lincoln Co., Kentucky, who married there in 1791, citing a 1941 book but no other sources; other researchers (including this one) have given his parents as a William H and Catherine (Henderson) Logan, but probate records for William and Catherine disprove it

Based on hints from "Historic Families of Kentucky" (1889), in which there is a very long chapter on "The Logans" and allied families, as well as later (1932) research in the Kentucky Historical Society magazine, this branch may have migrated to Lincoln county, Kentucky in the 1770s or 1780s, thence to Shelby county, Kentucky, and thence to Davidson or Sullivan county, Tennesse, before migrating in the early 1820s to Alabama.
