    Born in Ireland and known in Welsh history as "Yr Arglwydd Rhys," The Lord Rhys. Married Gwenillian, daughter of Meda ap Meridith, Prince of Powys. RHYS won recognition of his crown from King Henry II in 1158 and built Dynevor Castle. He had a daughter Gwenillian, and sons Hywel, Griffith, Rhys, Cynwrig, and MEREDITH. RHYS is buried at St. David's Cathedral. The Morgan family connection to the Royal Family of Britain derives from Lord RHYS.

    Notes:

    Returned to Wales from exile in Ireland to fight the Normans in 1113. Married Gwenillian, daughter of Griffith ap Cynan, King of Gwynedd, in 1116. Gwenillian was killed leading her husband's army in an attack on the Norman castle at Kidwelly in 1136; the spot where she fell is named Maes Gwenillian in her honor. GRIFFITH continued the rebellion against the Normans. Their sons were Merideth, Morgan, and RHYS.
