Per family legend, Richard Fleming Donison changed his last name to Donaldson between 1906 and 1908 some where en route from Missouri to New Mexico. There is rumor it had something to do with a murder and cover up.

He is said to have been a cattle rustler who would steal cattle in New Mexico and take them south to sell. At one point he is said to have returned with a "squaw," whom he took as his wife. It is not said what would have happened to Roxie Ann (Wardlow) in order to allow this.

Both these legends are completely counter to primary documents (e.g. court records, vital records, deed records, etc.), though the surname spelling does settle on "Donaldson" as Richard reaches adulthood, presumably because he was literate. Deed records of Stoddard Co., Missouri, use both "Donison" and "Donaldson" in reference to Richard's father, George A Donison/Donaldson.
