Daniel lived first in Cambridge, then in Woburn and in 1653 was one of the twenty "first petitioners" for the grant of the plantation of Chelmsford (Mass.) near Lowell. The next year he took up land for cultivation in the West Precinct of Chelmsford, in 1659 he had four acres in "Little Tadmuk" a part of Chelmsford, and in January 1666 he was appointed "one of a committee to state every proprietor in the "New Filed" the proportion of his fence. Daniel was the son of Frederick Swartzwelder and Hannah Evans.
On the farm adjoining the homestead is a small private Swartzwelder graveyard, not well kept. Mr. Floyd
J. Robinson, the present owner (May 1967) states that the fenced-in portion is considerably
smaller at present than at first.
The Swartzwelders owned a large farm 11 miles south of Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania
in Black Valley. The house, a substantial stone sturcture with a 3" x 6" stone in gable. It states
that the house was built by Daniel Swartzwelder, 25 August 1849.

DAVID A. NICHOLS FAMILY CEMETERY
By

About a mile west of Beckemeyer on Route 50 is the Beckemeyer Cemetery. Almost due north, about 300 yards, in the edge of the timber lie three forgotten and neglected graves. Local tradition says that it is a husband and wife and one childy all died about the same time of diptheria and were buried on their farm land. The stones are broken and some pieces could not be found when a young Central High School freshman boy, Mike Kruse, of Beckemeyer took the inventory. The pieces were scattered and some were missing. Perhaps with a little probing in the ground missing pieces can be located and the stones repaired. There was no excavation down [sic] when Mike took the inventory on October 18, 1980. This is what could be found:

David Logan was born May 6, 1847, Fayette County, Alabama to Robert "Bob" Logan and Virginia Jane "Jennie" McCaleb. The Logans were staunch Republicans and Church of Christ believers. Robert had been raised as a Presbyterian but was supposedly converted by Andrew Campbell.
The eight brothers, born between 1823 and 1847 all supported the Union cause although the oldest, Daniel Lapsley "Lap" Logan could not enlist for medical reasons. Because of a hernia, he was unable to serve in the Union Army with his brothers but he helped build bridges for the Union forces. It is possible Lap died from tuberculosis although it is rumored he was murdered and his body tied on the back of horse, taken home, and thrown into the yard.
Harm enlisted in the Union Army in January, 1863 as a private with Company K, 1st Regiment, Alabama Calvary. He deserted (no additional information available) and since he had served less than 90 days, he was denied a military pension. He married Betty Elizabeth "Bessie" Pratt, daughter of Abijiah K. Pratt and S. E. Hardin. Bessie was born June 24, 1852 and died of appendicitis on June 18, 1917. They had six children and were considered to be prosperous farmers in Marion County, Alabama. He died of old age and heart failure on April 25, 1921 and is buried with his wife at Guin City Cemetery, Marion County, Alabama.

Death certificate alleges she died aged 102 years, 8 months, 28 days (born 1832). However, her youngest child, Newton Miller, would then have been born when she was aged at least 50. Most census sources (except 1930) give her birth in the early 1840s. She gave her own age several times in her Civil War widow's pension applications, consistently at 1836-7. | Welch, Mary Ann (I186)

Death certificate shows him as 71 years old at his death. The headstone transcription at Find A Grave gives an 1891 death year, leading to the possible conclusion it's not the right grave, but the month and day match and the Greensburg Daily Tribune of 30 Mar 1896 gives the cemetery name. Correcting the year transcription error and taking the age at death given on the headstone gives this birth date. | McDowell, Samuel (I2764)
