St. Lukes' district, early Person County, NC in 1783, Robert Hester, Sr. owned 200 acres of land, one white pole and three blacks. His will dated 22 August, 1820 and probated June 1827 in Persons County NC listed 6 children Henry, William Buck, Nicholas, Elijah, Nancy Malone and Sally Malone. The tax records of Persons County, NC list William Hester in 1806 with one white pole and one vote.
Person County, NC was founded in 1791. There were at least 3 Robert Hesters who were soldiers in the Revolutionary War and there is no doubt but what the ancestors of Robert Hester, Sr. belonged to the Virginia group of 1680. However, the official record of them during that period has not been located. A copy of the will of Robert Hester Sr. may be obtained from the Hall of Archives, Raleigh, NC for a small fee. The original is recorded in Will Book #10, page 328. It was tranferred there several years ago from Roxboro, NC. A copy of the marriage license of William Hester and Amy Malone may be obtained from the County Clerk, Person County, Roxboro, NC for a fee.

Robert Hester served in the Revolutionary War. His will, dated August 22, 1820 and probated June 1827 in Person Co., NC and listed his children.

    Notes:

Some sources say William "Buck" Hester was born in Ceder Creek, Franklin County, North Carolina. He left North Carolina in the Spring of 1818 for north Alabama. He was accompanied by his oldest son, Roling. That spring they cleared several acres of land in Franklin County near Gaines Trace at Tharp Springs and planted a corn crop. In the fall they returned to North Carolina to bring Amy and the rest of the children to Alabama in an ox cart. Two of Amy's brothers, Pumpfrey Malone and James Malone, also made the trip and settled in Alabama at the same time. The 1830 census of Franklin County, Alabama shows a Wm Hester, P(umpfrey) Malone, James Malone and R(oling) Hester all on the same page, p. 41.

In his book Forefathers of Franklin County, p. 76, Ritchie Hester recounts that a short while later Buck moved his family to Tollison Creek to be in a less populated area and to be near Amy's brothers. According to Ritchie Hester, Buck had a reputation as a great bear hunter and the Tollison Creek area offered bountiful fishing and game.

Buck made his living as a farmer.

According to Johnny Hester in his book Facts and Fables of Franklin County pgs. 31-32, there are two theories regarding where Buck Hester may be buried. Some people believe that he is buried in the Malone Cemetery which is the final resting place of his son, Roling. There is an unmarked grave next to Lucendy, Roling Hester's wife. Some people believe that this is Buck's grave.

The second theory is that Buck is buried in an unnamed cemetery about 2 1/2 miles from Frankfort. The cemetery has ten unmarked graves. Less than a quarter of a mile from Buck's last homeplace, this is a possibility because it was customary at that time for people to buried near their homes. Some people believe that this may be the burial site for both Buck and Amy.

    Notes:

At least four sons of Roling Hester (b. 23 Jan 1807 NC, d. 20 Jul 1882 AL) and Lucinda Richardson (b. 9 Dec 1805 GA, d. 9 Oct 1875 AL) served in the Confederate Army. Roling was the son of William "Buck" Hester (b. 27 Jan 1780 NC, d. 5 Oct 1847 Franklin Co., AL) and Amy Malone. "Buck" Hester and Amy Malone were married 18 Oct 1805 in Person County, North Carolina. Amy was born 17 March 1789 in North Carolina and died 23 Jan 1840 Franklin County, Alabama. She was the daughter of John Malone (b. abt 1763 North Carolina) and Anne Blackwell who married 25 Jul 1786 in Granville County, NC. John was a son of Daniel Malone (b. about 1725 Virginia). Buck Hester was the son of Robert Hester (will written 22 Aug 1820 and probated June 1827, Person Co., NC). Buck came to Franlin county in 1818, first settling east of Russelville, around Tharp Springs. He later moved near Frankfort along Tollison creek. Buck and Amy Hester were the parents of sixteen children, four of whom were known to have served in the Confederate army: Sgt. William Carroll Hester, Pvt. Roland Benton Hester, Sterling Richardson Hester (rank unknown) and Pvt. Wiley Robertson Hester.

Roling Hester was born 23 January 1807 in North Carolina. He was the oldest child of William H. (Buck) Hester Sr. and Amy Malone Hester. In the spring of 1818, the year before Alabama became a state, young Roling, a lad 11 years of age, traveled by ox cart with his father, William H. (Buck) Hester Sr., from North Carolina to northwest Alabama. They settle five or six miles east of Russellville, Alabama, near the Gaines Trace at Tharp Springs. They cleared land, planted a small corn crop and erected a log cabin for themselves. William H. (Buck) Hester Sr. secured a section of land in 1818 in Franklin County from the Bureau of Land Management. Franklin County was created February 4, 1818 by the Alabama Territorial Legislature at St. Stephens.

In the latter part of 1818, Roling and his father returned to North Carolina to bring Roling's mother, Amy Malone Hester, and her six other children to their new home in Alabama. On the trip to Alabama, the Hester family was accompanied by Pumphrey and James Malone, who were brothers of Amy Malone Hester. They traveled in an ox cart caravan from Person County, North Carolina to their new home in the Territory of Alabama. In Alabama, the number of children of William H. (Buck) Hester Sr. and Amy Malone Hester grew to a total of 16.

Subsequently the Hester famly left their first settlement east of Russellville to relocate near the banks of Tollison creek, near Frankfort, Alabama. Descendants think the reason for the move was that the eastern part of Franklin County was becoming too heavily populated. largely as a result of the finalizing of the 1817 Indian treaties. This increase in population lessened the supply of fish and game in east Franklin County. There was a bountiful supply of wild game in the unsettled wilderness and an abundance of fish in Tollison creek. This area was bounded on the western side by the Chickasaw Indian Territory, which followed the course of Cane Creek through what is today Colbert County (created 1867) and continued southward through Franklin County. According to old land records, Roling Hester purchased over 200 acres of land in this area between 1834 and 1855.

At the age of 22, Roling married Lucendy Richardson, a native of Georgia who was 17 at the time. They reared nine children to adulthood. Eight of these children parented large families. Their third child, James Goodloe Hester never married. Much of the seventy five year life span of Roling Hester was spent along Tollison Creek. He and his wife Lucendy Richardson Hester, are buried in that area of Franklin County, Alabama, in the Malone Cemetery.

Probate records of Franklin Co., Alabama were destroyed in 1890 and are not available for earlier years (26 Sep 2017)

Copied from the Franklin County Times, Russellville, Alabama,
    Dated: Thursday, August 29, 1929
(The spelling in this newspaper article is copied as it was printed, by: Ann Glasgow.)

Wiley R. Hester, Pioneer, Passes, Aged 85 Years

Was last of his generation and was widely known and highly respected

Mr. Wiley R. Hester died Tuesday night, August 27, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Britton, at Belgreen. He had been ill some time and his death was not unexpected by his host of friends throughout Franklin county, of which he was an honored pioneer.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Belgreen, conducted by the Methodist pastor, Rev. Bowen, and were largely attended by relatives and friends. Interment was in Belgreen cemetery.

Mr. Hester was the oldest member of the large Hester family in Franklin county, having celebrated his eighty-fifth birthday anniversary July 25. He was an upright citizen and enjoyed the respects and esteem of all who knew him. He reared eleven children, all of whom survive him. His wife died several years ago. His children are:

Mrs. Mollie King, Belgreen; Mrs. Ella Ezzell, near Pleasant Site; Ed Hester, Belgreen; Mrs. J. L. Sparks, near Frankfort; John Hester, Texas; Charles Hester, Belgreen; Walter Hester, Belgreen, G. Hester, near Boonville, Miss; Mrs. Dora Britton, Moorewood, Oklahoma; Herbert Hester, Spruce Pine; Mrs. Cora Britton, Belgreen.

Mr. Hester also is survived by over 100 grandchildren and great-grand children. He served in the Confederate army, making a splendid record.

Private Wiley Robertson Hester, was born 25 Jul 1844 Frankfort, Franklin County, Alabama, died 28 Aug 1929 Franklin county, Alabama. Wiley pension record file states in different places that he was in Company L and in another place gives company E of the 4th Alabama Cavalry. The reference to Co E (4th AL CAV) appears to be an error, since it was in Co E of the 16th Alabama Infantry that Wiley first saw action (enlisted Aug 18th 1861, Courtland, Alabama at age 17). Sometime during 1863 he transferred to Co L 4th Alabama Cavalry.

During his days in the Infantry, he saw action at the Battle of Fish Creek, Kentucky, Shiloh and at Corinth. In Corinth, he was wounded-- shot himself through the hand, due to an "accident in Camp." Wiley was discharged and paroled at Tuscumbia (also given as "Old Newport") in Spring of 1865. He married in 1868 to Mourn Christine Thompson, daughter of William J. Thompson and Eliner Almirah Crow (Mourn's death certificate gives her mother's name as "Elimira Coleman". I am not certain which is correct). Wiley was a member of the Belgreen Methodist Church and is buried in the church cemetery. He was described as "an upright citizen and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him." They had the following children:

    1. Mollie Joe Hester (b. 11 Mar 1870, d. 15 Nov 1953), Married William Robert King, son of Epperson King and Marite Evaline Brown.

    2. Rebecca Louella Hester (b. 9 Feb 1872, d. 13 Nov 1940), Married James Garrison Ezzell, son of James Marion Ezzell and Sarah Ann Hunnicutt.

    3. James Edward Hester (b. 21 Sep 1874, d. 12 Jun 1948), Married Mary Rebecca Sparks, daughter of Christopher Columbus Sparks and Adeline Cook.

    4. Alma Jerusa Hester (b. 27 Aug 1876, d. 21 Nov 1955), Married John Lemuel Sparks, son of Christopher
    Columbus Sparks and Adeline Cook.

    5. John Roling Hester (b. 19 Apr 1878, d. 19 Dec 1963), Married Georgia Ann Lowry, daughter of Peter Bascom and E. V. Battle.

    6. Charles Fortner Hester (b. 2 Nov 1879, d. 18 Oct 1939), Married Annie Leona Britton.

    7. Walter Alexander Hester (b. 17 Nov 1881, d. 27 Jul 1964), Married Jessie Florence Hooper.

    8. Wiley George Hester (b.31 Mar 1883, d. 27 Apr 1968), Married Sarah Alice Bolton.

    9. Roberta Eudora Hester (b. 13 Aug 1886, d. 3 Sep 1982), Married William Edgar Britton, son of Corridon Dexter Britton and Rebecca Ezzell.

    10. William Herbert Hester (b. 13 Jun 1889, d. 12 Feb 1962), Married Martha Elizabeth Britton.

    11. Cora Ethel Hester (b. 25 Dec 1892, d. 28 Nov 1972), Married James Dexter Britton.

In 1916, Wiley applied for a Confederate pension. On it he listed 144 acres he owned in Franklin County, Alabama which was valued at $ 6.00. Other property he had was one horse ($75); three cattle ($45); one hog ($5); one gun ($5); two watches/clocks ($2); household furniture ($50); one bicycle/vehicle ($10); and farming tools ($25).
