    Notes:

"In "Hunts of Tennessee", Mrs Evelyn Mitchell Madry of Atlanta, Ga. states Ralph Hunt was b. 1699 and died 1769--a discrepancy from the dates quoted--from Bill & Clara and from IGI. He bought 140 A. in Hanover Co.,Va. in 1723 & 132 A. on North side of Fishing Creek (Hanover Co.) on 6 Oct 1746 from Seth Pettypoole of Lunenburg Co. Memucan Hunt Howard, a great grand-son, gives the dates of birth and death and the family of his grandfather, Memucan, whom he states is the "third son". Fleetwood Jones states "Ralph and his brother James lived in Hanover Co. until James left for what is the present day Charlotte. Brother Joseph and James' son Charles lived in King William Co. prior to moving near James. Ralph who had purchased land the same day as James never left Hanover. Ralph's date of death comes from Mormon record # F502677. Sources state Ralph & Dina had ten children. I have more here, but none of Ralph's children are actually documented and more work is needed on this family. Bill Hunt, of Fairport, doubts that Christopher is a son, and Clara Hunt Miller doubts that William with wife, Rosa, is a son; however, all agree that he had a son William. Ralph also had land in Henrico Co. See Catherine Gheesling's records for more on this man. Records on proposed children of this man should be checked very carefully, as it is almost impossible to document them."

Christopher transfered 100 acres of land in Anson Co., N. Carolina "granted to me 24 Apr. 1762" and was in Cheraw Dist., Craven Co., S. Carolina when he sold this on 10 March 1763 to William S. Sherley.

    Notes:

Memucan Hunt (1729-1808) was an early American statesman and the first person to hold the position of North Carolina State Treasurer in its current form.

A native of Virginia, Memucan Hunt settled in Granville County (now Vance) on a plantation. At the age of 41, in 1770, Hunt was chosen Sergeant-at-Arms of the colonial North Carolina General Assembly and in 1773 was elected as Representative to the Assembly from Granville County. When the spirit of independence began to rise in the colony, Hunt represented Granville County in the five Provincial Congresses. In 1777, with the War for Independence underway, the fiscal needs of the colony were among its greatest concerns. Hunt was appointed Treasurer of the Hillsborough district, one of six district treasurers in the State at that time. He continued to hold office in the General Assembly and in 1779 was elected to the State Senate, serving as a member of the Committee of Accounts.

In November 1783, the General Assembly, in session at New Bern, abolished the district treasurer offices and established the singular fiscal position of State Treasurer and elected Hunt to fill the post. He took office on January 1, 1784, at a salary of 500 pounds per year.

During his term in office, Hunt unwittingly honored fraudulent claims for military service stemming from the Revolutionary War (paying too generously soldiers who had fought in the Revolutionary War, and in some cases, paying soldiers who had not fought at all), which resulted in both litigation and hearings by the General Assembly. While he was not charged with malfeasance, he was defeated for re-election in 1787 by John Haywood. Hunt retired from politics to Granville County, where he became a wealthy planter and served as justice of the peace until 1792.

At the time of his death in 1808, at age 79, Hunt owned nearly 16,000 acres (65 km²) of land, 22 slaves, two horses, four mares, 14 head of cattle and 33 hogs.

His grandson, Memucan Hunt, Jr., was the namesake for Hunt County, Texas.

Memucan married Mary Wade 9 Mar 1754, Halifax Co., Virginia. Mary was born 3 Sep 1736, North Carolina; died 1825. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    B. A. Howard, in his Mss. "A Record of the Howard & Hunt Families", on Pg. 46. states: "My Grandfather Hunt (Memucan) had a brother, Nathaniel, who went into the army, was gone seven years, and his wife, supposing him to be dead, married again. He came back, and claimed his wife, but she preferred the second husband. He then went to Lincoln Co., Tn. and married again, and had children, some of whom moved to Shelby Co., Tn. and to DeSoto Co., Ms. This Nathaniel Hunt, when old and poor, hired a man to go on foot with him to his nearest relatives, in Granville Co., N.C. He was to give him his horse and equipage for so doing. The first relative's house he reached was my father's, where the footman took possession of the old man's horse, and returned to Tennessee. The old man finally took up at Col. Wm. Hunt's, as he had plenty of room and property, and there I saw him in 1825. His first wife was still living, a widow, and had considerable property. David Graves, a wild, reckless man, who married my mother's sister Nancy, persuaded the old man to call on his first wife and propose a second marriage, but she informed him that she had had enough of him when he was younger. He abandoned the matter, and soon afterward, died at Col. Hunt's.
