| 3080 | Paul L. Violand died Sunday. He was born November 4, 1920 in Canton, Ohio, to the late Lawrence and Anna Mae Mospens Violand. A member of Saint Michael?s Catholic Church for almost 35 years, he has lived in Canton since he returned from Merchant Marine duties in World War II and married Mary Catherine Laubacher on October 26, 1946, with whom he had six children; she died in 1977. He married Shirley Ruddersmith in 1979; she died in 1998. He married Bernadine Daniska in 1998; she died in 2001. He is survived by loving companion Janice Renner of Dover, five children and their spouses: Joseph and Rebecca Violand, Charles and Karen Violand, Lucinda (Cindy) and Edward Piccari, Jean (Jurovcik) and Larry Fisher, and Mark and Margaret Violand; and two sisters and their spouses: Rita and Richard Schott and Gerry and Frank Garfield. He is also survived by grandchildren and spouses and great-grandchildren: Jennifer and Patrick Coakley and Riley; Chris Violand and Laura Scalia and Dylan; Justin and Xenia Jurovcik; Joshua and Mary Kay Jurovcik; Catie, Andrew and Michael Jurovcik; and Jessica, Claire, Alyssa, Charlton, Julianne, Alexander and Adrienne Violand. Also surviving are the children and grandchildren of Shirley, Bernadine and Janice, and many loving members of the Laubacher family. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by an infant son Raymond, and his brothers, twins John and James Violand. He graduated from Louisville High School in 1940, and had been employed by Weber Dental Manufacturing and Fishers Foods. He retired from Plain Local Schools in 1985. Paul was very proud that his twenty years of retirement allowed him to be active in community service. He volunteered with clients of Stark County MRDD Whipple Dale Center, including a yearly backyard picnic at his place, and delivered Meals On Wheels for most of those years. A past president and vice president of Everhard Belden AARP #4121 and past president of his high school reunion, he was past president of the Hall of Fame Merchant Marine and U.S. Navy Armed Guard Veterans of World War II and thoroughly enjoyed riding in parades in the group's float, a WWII-era lifeboat. A member of the Mayfield Center Seniors and of the Mayfield Center Senior Volunteers, Paul called bingo for many years. He enjoyed membership in Saint Michael's Sociable Seniors, bus trips with Primetime Seniors through Aultman Hospital, and golfed until a few years ago. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church with Fr. Bradford Helman as Celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 6-9 p.m. in the Lamiell Funeral Home. | 3087 | Per family legend, Richard Fleming Donison changed his last name to Donaldson between 1906 and 1908 some where en route from Missouri to New Mexico. There is rumor it had something to do with a murder and cover up. He is said to have been a cattle rustler who would steal cattle in New Mexico and take them south to sell. At one point he is said to have returned with a "squaw," whom he took as his wife. It is not said what would have happened to Roxie Ann (Wardlow) in order to allow this. Both these legends are completely counter to primary documents (e.g. court records, vital records, deed records, etc.), though the surname spelling does settle on "Donaldson" as Richard reaches adulthood, presumably because he was literate. He left Pennsylvania, came through Virginia, and married Elizabeth White. He married Mary Sparks, who was born in this township in 1798. They had eleven children, one of whome, Abram, lives upon the old homestead. The house, a substantial stone structure, was built by Baltzer Morgart as a tavern, and kept by him many years. He also held some local offices and was closely identified with the interests of the Providence Baptist church. Abram Morgart is married to Miss Sarah McElwain.
