Notes |
- Elizabeth Hull holds a high rank among the heroic gentlewomen of that period, and is deserving of more space than can be given in this volume, but the story of her experience on an exposed outpost, where for a long time she was surrounded by hostile savages, has been told in detail by Mather, Wilkinson, Belknap and Wharton, all of whom bear testimony to her heroism and devotion. One incident in her remarkable career will have to suffice in this connection.
During the unprovoked and cruel massacre of Indians by whites in 1676, she saved the life of a young Indian by concealing him until his would-be slayers had left her house and then aided him to escape. Twelve years later she fell into the hands of the savages and was enabled to escape by the aid of this same Indian.
